By Lynn O'Shaughnessy on October 11, in Applying Today I wanted to pass along some advice about college essays from Bruce Hammond, a former high school counselor and the co-author of numerous Fiske Guides, including one on writing college essays. I read his advice this week on a list serve for members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. I changed my view on the length issue after co-editing a book of student essays.
The healthcare industry offers a wide range of career options.
A college education can provide the knowledge and skills to prepare healthcare professionals. Please describe your healthcare career goals and the factors contributing to your decision.
Include in your essay how your personal qualities, academic and community experiences are preparing you for your career choice.
Students must add to their personal statement a description of their commitment for supporting healthy communities and promoting healthier lifestyles. Statement should also note career goals and where the student would like to work. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who are contributing to communities served by the Partners for Health Foundation.
Financial needs as confirmed by Financial Aid Office may be considered in candidate selection. Applicants must provide in the personal statement an indication of how they anticipate being part of the healthcare industry and the way in which their college degree will assist in achieving career goals.
Personal statement may be up to words to allow incorporation of these added elements. Scholarship is renewable for a second year if candidate continues to meet scholarship criteria. The Barry Gillman Humanitarian Scholarship honors the compassion and spirit of volunteerism embodied by the late Barry Gillman by encouraging undergraduate students to continue in their humanitarian work while attending college. With CA4, the current Common Application, you'll need to enter your essay in a text box that counts words.
You won't be allowed to enter anything over words. Note that there is also a minimum length—CA4 won't accept any essay under words.
If you are applying to a college that does allow you to go over the limit, or if you have a supplemental essay with a recommended word count that isn't enforced by the application software, you still should not go over the limit.
I guess there used to be a limit to words, so most would advise that you shouldn't exceed by too much. In most cases, a brilliant word essay is much better than a dull word essay, but try your best to keep your word count under control.
